The SmartyPants Theater Company, formed in June 2001, brings high energy Improvisational Comedians from Chicago, New York and Kansas City to YOU!
Improv Comedy is comedic theatre based on suggestions from the audience. With Smartypants, the audience writes the show so you will never see the same show twice! Every show is filled with energy, completely unique, and based entirely on audience suggestions.
Smartypants works closely with the Muse Machine and can be seen in many Dayton area schools. We are a uniquely flexible group of improvisational actors who adapt easily to many educational settings and situations. The primary goal of Smarty Pants is to allow students a rewarding creative outlet for the natural comic in all of us.

Who is the SmartyPants Theater Co.?
The SmartyPants Theater Co. is a group of
grown up “silly kids” who have one common goal.
That goal is to take the surrounding environment and mold it into a
funny moment. They are all
very dedicated and hard working artists that have been performing in
southwest Ohio together every week for over 2 years.
These artists bring to the SmartyPants over 15 years of
professional experience and training from Detroit, Chicago, and Kansas
City to provide the highest quality workshop or performance for your
school or program. What
Does The SmartyPants Theater Co. do? The
SmartyPants do a stage performance that takes place in the space of an
hour. There is very little,
if any, of this performance that we script out or plan ahead of time.
The entire show is written, directed, choreographed, and performed
right in front of your eyes using games that were originally designed to
aid Theater Actors to become better at their trade.
The players will then come to the classroom to provide a chance for
students and teachers to play similar games.
These games can also aid in making the regular class day more
engaging and spontaneous. Where
and when does the SmartyPants Theater Co. perform? The
SmartyPants currently work most often with the MUSE Machine in Dayton,
Ohio, and make regular appearances at the Quest Theater on Friday and
Saturday nights. However this
group of artist has ties to many local Improvisational Comedy groups in
the southwest Ohio area. They
have done performances at Cincinnati Museum Center in Cincinnati, OH, The
Paris Convention Center in Paris, TN, and The Girls Scouts of Singing
Sands Council in Laporte, IN just to name a few. Why
does the SmartyPants Theater
Co. perform
improvisational theater?
Improvisational theater allows for the
performers and even the smallest audience to interact.
Most of the players probably started off watching a live improvised
performance and became involved just because of the very nature of the
show is to include the audience. Once
a player has started to play along it is very easy to find more and more
ways to become involved. Everyone
involved in an improvisational performance helps to contribute to its
success. It is very easy to
shine at whatever you do best in improvisation because the performers
always try to highlight other people’s strongest skills.
Improvisation is truly designed to find a fun way to include
everyone. The best way to get involved is to wait for that moment when a player asks you for a suggestion. Then just say out loud and proud the first thing that comes to your mind. In no time you will be laughing at what you helped create. [back]
